Welcome to Bedok Town                            Pasir RisTampines-Simei

Historical Origins
'Bedok' is a Malay name for the drum that was used, in the days pre-dating the loudspeaker, to call worshippers for prayers at the mosques. At Jalan Sempadan, on the outskirts of Bedok there is a cemetery where Rhio and Bornean relatives who settled in the district in the pre-Rafflesian days are buried. Siglap, the southern part of the Bedok area was once a vast coconut plantation, known as the Siglap Estate, that stretched from the beach to Changi Road.

In 1966, the Bedok area was extended due to land reclaimed under the East Coast Reclamation Scheme. This reclaimed land was used for new residential, commercial and recreational facilities.

Bedok Town covers about 940 hectare with approximately 42% under residential use. Formerly a hilly region, the town's highlights are the carefully landscaped parks and a sports complex that are built on the higher grounds of the town. The town was built on the neighbourhood concept.

Location and Layout
Bedok town is located in the Eastern Region of Singapore. Bedok Town is bounded by Paya Lebar to the North, Tampines Town to the east, Marine Parade Town to the south, and Geylang to the West.

Transport Facilites
The town is served by Bedok MRT Station and the Bedok Bus Interchange located at the town centre. It has excellent public transportation links and good access to major expressways (ECP, PIE, TPE). There are plans for a new Rapid Transit Line to complement the existing East-West MRT Line and provide better accessibility between the eastern and central regions.

Housing Options
Bedok Town is an established housing area with excellent amenities. It offers a good selection of low, medium and high-density housing. The East Coast Town Council provides a detailed breakdown of the residential/commercial units around Bedok South Ave 1, Bedok South Ave 2, Bedok South Ave 3, Bedok South Road and New Upper Changi Road.

Under the Town Renewal Programme, which complements the Government Upgrading Programme encompassing the Main/Interim Upgrading Programme (MUP/IUP), 80% or more of the flats in Bedok Town have either already been upgraded or are in the process.

Town Amenities & Attractions
Bedok Town is well supported by community facilities such as schools, places of worship, Bedok Community Library and Bedok Polyclinic.

In addition to the popular Bedok Swimming Complex and Bedok Sports Hall, recreational activities including in-line blading and cycling can be enjoyed at Bedok Town Park along Bedok North Ave 3, and the much bigger Bedok Reservoir Park along Bedok Reservoir Road.

The East Coast Town Council has launched a Town Renewal Programme that aims to improve the essential amenities in the Town. Under this master plan, markets and food centres, neighbourhood commercial centres, neighbourhood parks and park connectors will be upgraded.
